Here is the basic pitch formula: (90 Seconds)

Problem:

Describe the problem you are solving.

Opportunity:

Investors prefer large, addressable (meaning you can “reach” them) markets: Data here is essential. Give us believable market research that shows you understand who the customer and/or user is, and how many of them are out there.

Solution:

This is your unique solution to the problem – your “secret sauce”. What are you doing that others can’t or aren’t?

Traction (if any):

What indicators of success have you experienced so far? Have you interview potential customers? Do you have pre-orders? Have you piloted something? Do you have a prototype? Do you have any strategic partnerships set up with companies or groups that can help you? Do you have unique access to technology, or a license to use a resource that belongs to someone else? You get the point…

Team: Who is on your team? Why is your team different/special? Investors are not investing in your idea. They are investing in your team. Ideas change. What makes your team EXACTLY the people who can pull this off? Play to your strengths. If you are missing someone or a particular skill set, then be sure you can address it in Q&A.

What else? What pitch resources/ tips do YOU love?

SuperConf2012 took place in Miami Beach, FL from February 24-25. It was an awesome experience for the USFSP Entrepreneurship Club. I do not consider myself a very tech-savvy person, but as a student of entrepreneurship it was great to see what kinds of businesses were being developed in the tech world. I will run down the list for anyone out there curious to know what businesses presented at the conference for a shot at $20,000. Here’s the list of the nine companies that competed:

Freqent [www.freqent.com]

Freqent (pronounced “frequent”) aims to centralize customer reward cards. Rather than having to create and develop a rewards program for your business, Freqent provides this option for you. As a business owner, you can implement their online system while customizing how rewards will be handed out. As a customer, you simply carry this card everywhere you go and present it to the cashier at whatever business uses Freqent as their reward system intermediary.

My thoughts: Good idea for tackling the small and medium size business markets. If a small coffee or sandwich shop wants to develop a reward program but has no idea where or how to begin, this is who can help them. Not to mention, this is a service that creates loyalty, something that is tough to come by in a world filled with competitors in any industry. Overall, I think Freqent has a lot of opportunity in their future.

Politify [www.politify.us]

Politify is a web application that forecasts the financial impacts of political scenarios. Users can input some general information (income, filing status, age, zip code, etc.) and Politify will show the user, in dollar amount, how they would be impacted by the election of a potential presidential candidate. Politify also links users to candidate’s donation page and provides links to voter registration information.

My thoughts: This is a great idea. Any tool to help American’s understand the impact of their vote is important. However, I will say that I am not pleased that there is no information provided as for what the candidate’s stance is on political topics. That is, while Politify may indicate the best choice for your wallet, it does not indicate what’s best for your ethical or political beliefs. Perhaps adding criteria for the user to list what they stand for (like abortion, gay marriage, military budget, etc.) can be added down the road; for the time being, this needs to be considered by the user from information gathered elsewhere than Politify. Overall, it’s an exciting step toward making it easier for American’s to understand just how crucial our vote really is.

LiveNinja [www.liveninja.com]

LiveNinja is a video chat marketplace and monetization platform for experts on any topic. For example, if I want to learn to play the guitar, I can search their site for a guitarist who gives lessons. Once I decide who I want to go with, I set up an appointment and pay the guitarist the amount they indicate on their page (like $30 for half hour lesson/$50 for an hour). The user only pays the professional once the video session has begun. LiveNinja eliminates the problem for people to easily access professionals in many different fields, while providing professionals (“Ninjas” as they call) access to more clients.

My thoughts: This was one of my favorite businesses at SuperConf. I think this website has an enormous amount of opportunity. Imagine having a special dinner planned for your parents, but you aren’t the most skilled chef. Why not pay $20 for a half-hour video session to learn how to cook the best homemade Lasagna your parents will ever taste from a professional who has years and years of experience in the culinary industry. Or maybe your son or daughter needs help with their Algebra but you simply don’t have time to help them yourself or find a tutor, LiveNinja can connect you to a professional without ever leaving your home. Overall, I won’t be surprised if this site takes off big down the road. How long that road will be, I’m not sure; but I know many people may find this website extremely useful.

71Lbs [www.71lbs.com]

71LBS (seventy-one pounds) helps small to medium size businesses better understand their shipping costs. 71LBs aims to get businesses back some of their money not claimed to the shipping company for late package arrivals, while also providing analytics on the shipping that occurs for the business. When it’s all said and done, 71LBs saves your company money, and the company only pays 71LBs with money that you saved by using them.

My thoughts: For start-ups or existing businesses who do a lot of shipping, this will be a company that can help cut cost and help better understand the shipping process. I think that without a doubt, 71LBs will be a need for many small but growing businesses. Since 71LBs aims to actually go through your shipping history and figure out where you missed on unclaimed money back returns for late arrivals on packages, they will give business owners a good idea of just how efficient (or inefficient) their shipping process is.

GoodMate.com [www.goodmate.co]

GoodMate is a roommate management application that solves the common pain points of living with roommates. GoodMate can help users better understand their monthly costs and budgets involved with their living situation while distributing the cost equally among all the people living in the apartment/condo/house. The application also provides convenience tools like a messaging board for “to-do’s”, a notification system for your phone or email and a calendar to track bills and expenses. There will be a phone application released soon as stated on their website.

My thoughts: This is a very unique idea, without a doubt. I think this application will be most useful to those living with roommates of 3 or more, but can still be very helpful for anyone who has any problems communicating with their roommate on chores and bills that need to be taken care of on a weekly or monthly basis. This application can also be used for parents who want their kids to stay connected to chores that need to be done. As someone who came from a family of 7, I know all about home duties that need to be taken care of by different individuals. This application can lay it all out in front of you and help plan who will do what chore and when it will be done.

WhatUpBridge [www.whatupbridge.com]

WhatUpBridge is a free service that lets you track bridges, railroad crossings, and other infrastructure according to your schedule. The service focuses on making the user aware of delays that may occur on their drive to and from destinations where a delay can occur.

My thoughts: Interesting idea that some people may find extremely helpful. For the Tampa Bay area as a whole, I don’t know that this application would be very novel. However, for those living in states with a lot more drawbridges and railroads, this may be a breakthrough application. Timing your routes is crucial for making appointments, and a tool that can explain to you routes that will save you time based on bridge and railroad delays will be considered novel by many.

Flomio [www.flomio.com]

Flomio makes it easy to build NFC and RFID enabled applications. They offer API, tags, readers and software to create web based solutions that respond to real world interactions.

My thoughts: As stated in the beginning of this article, I do not consider myself very tech-savvy. However, any application that works for creating more efficient tools for real world interactions is something you may want to keep an eye on. Hit up their website to see some of their latest projects and developments.

CodeMeet [www.codemeet.com]

CodeMeet is a live video and realtime platform for developers to work on code together. CodeMeet is a collaborative coding environment for developers to discuss and create code. Users can interact with other developers over live video while sharing code in realtime. CodeMeet is perfect for pair programming, code reviews, or technical presentations.

My thoughts: Neat program that will probably be used my many, many computer programmers. This business idea won the $10,000 first prize and I think it was pretty clear as to why – convenience and novelty. I do not do computer programming, but millions of people do. This tool will be extremely helpful for people who write code in teams (or even individually) but need to communicate on tasks with others.

DateLatte [www.datelatte.com]

Datelatte aims to provide an interactive web event based system allowing users to communicate via text, picture, and video to create a high quality dating experience. DateLatte is a breakthrough in the way online dating is used by providing a more personal approach to users. Their website indicates “how it works” as: (create profile and select home city) then, Event occurs on Monday and Wednesday nights at 8pm, emails are sent with invite links, users attend online dating event by clicking email link, users then get matched and interact with others from their city.

My thoughts: Very cool idea. Online dating or match sites have taken off. With sites like eHarmony and Match.com becoming household names that everyone knows, it’s refreshing to see something new. This website can connect two people via video chat for an instant meet and greet session. Rather than having to spend a first date with someone you have only seen pictures of and read criteria about, you can now speak with them live via video chat.

Also, we tweeted the entire time so check out for more goodies: #SuperConf2012.

Think you have what it takes to start a business over your spring break? How about on bus?

30 strangers have 3 days to conceive, build & launch a startup and compete for venture capital funding. On a bus going 60MPH.

Florida, Ohio, L.A., Silicon Valley, NYC (and five more to be announced) will be going head-to-head, competing for glory against the best doers in tech. Florida was among the first five regions selected based on the caliber of applicants, the buzz generated and sponsorship gathered. We’re looking for talented, entrepreneurial minded individuals to lead our bus to victory this year.

Hackathon + Competition + Roadtrip = StartupBus

StartupBus is an invitation-only community of hackers, hustlers and hipsters passionate about startups who compete in an annual hackathon-style competition on buses traveling across America at 60 mph towards Austin in time for SXSW, where teams will pitch to top-tier angels and VCs. The competition is intense, the constraints are challenging and the bonds forged are testament to the shared experience of Buspreneurs.

Are you a “Buspreneur”? If you are one of those driven, maniacal world-changers, you’re probably what we’re looking for.

Hackers – You’re more than a coder: you’re a versatile hacker, you’re bad-ass and you do what it takes to get the job done.

Hipsters – UX, UI, design. Shoot us a link to your portfolio. (Not a requirement, but if you are a front-end coder, please say so in your application.)

Hustlers - Your business acumen is second to none, you pitch in your sleep, you created the bubble. Innately undefinable, hustlers must prove they have the Midas touch.

Buses depart March 6, participate in semi-finals in San Antonio, arrive in Austin on March 9. The Grand Finale will at SXSW’s Startup Village on March 11.

Reuben Pressman and Hunter Payne want you to know that they’re staying.

In St. Petersburg, that is.

Last April, the creative partners and best friends were catapulted into local fame when their proposal to create Swings Tampa Bay won the 10-100-1000 Challenge — a competition co-sponsored by Creative Tampa Bay and Creative Loafing designed to solicit ideas for projects that could make Tampa Bay a better place.

With their $1,000 award, Pressman, 22, and Payne, 21, launched Swings, a public art and community building endeavor with a simple premise: by placing hand-painted swings (each comprised of a flat, wood seat decorated as an artwork and hung between two ropes) in unexpected locations, they would inject a sense of play into the city’s landscape, getting people to “think differently,” Pressman says.

Update!!

The deadline has been extended to Thursday 2/2/12. One team has already stepped up (yeah, buddy!), so there is just one more slot open for the entire university. We haven’t gotten any more specifics on the structure of the challenge, however, Dr. Jackson is on the trail and we will share as soon as possible. Lastly, as I mentioned in class, these are the types of experiences that create real value in your business school education. I strongly encourage case study competitions, biz plan and pitch competitions, and case-writing competitions. You’ve got nothing to lose, and it’s a great way to bring some prestige to USFSP if we win, and beyond being a legitimate resume builder, it’s a great way to get yourself recognized in the community. - 1/30/12 Nathan Schwagler

Currently, students are operating independent of the academic program when they engage with companies who are soliciting for interns via the Club site/Facebook page. As such, it is up to the individual to screen these opportunities thoughtfully, just as they would vet opportunities discovered via other digital media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, etc.). They are free to negotiate/discuss with the client company. In the future, it is likely that we will develop (as a club) a more deliberate process to managing inquiries for interns…

SEEC 2012 is a 2 to 4 day event that will consist of 2 days of conference agenda, pitch competition and business plan competition events to be held Friday and Saturday April 1st and 2nd. The event will be held in sunny Tampa, FL. Attendees have the option of coming early Thursday for a team building event. Attendees also have the option of staying Sunday for a Networking on the Beach event which will consist of casual networking to encourage business relationships in a non business and tropical setting.

Besides the optional Thursday and Sunday events, the agenda of the conference consists of 4 keynotes, 14 breakout sessions, a lunch panel, two rounds of the pitch competition, and a presentation from the pitch and business plan finalists along with awarding the winner. At this point we are only accepting the first 150 registrants. Next year we will make plans for greater attendance as needed.
